There's no shortcut to winning skill-based tournaments — but there are habits that consistently separate players who place from players who don't. Here are seven worth building into your routine.

1. Match the tournament to your skill level

Higher entry fees usually attract more experienced players. If you're newer to competitive play, starting in lower-fee tournaments lets you build match experience without facing the toughest lobbies right away.

2. Read the format before you join
